2012 — A Scientific Reality Check: There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there… So here is the scientific reality on the celestial happenings in the year 2012. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — DECEMBER 2012 — A SCIENTIFIC REALITY CHECK (Written by Don Yeomans, NASA senior research scientist) Nibiru, a purported large object headed toward Earth, simply put – does not exist. There is no credible evidence – telescopic or otherwise – for this object’s existence. There is also no evidence of any kind for its gravitational affects upon bodies in our solar system. I do however like the name Nibiru. If I ever get a pet goldflish (and I just may do that sometime in early 2013), Nibiru will be at the top of my list. The Mayan calendar does not end in December 2012. Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period, but then — just as your calendar begins again on January 1 – another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar. There are no credible …

@DataJackOne What the hell? 1. I made no claim about the Earth being destroyed, read my posts, idiot. 2. Since I made no claim about the Earth being destroyed, I don’t have to give any evidence.

@thebrassdubliner I realized after posting my initial response to your tantrum that one such as you MIIIIIIGHT have some problems connecting the dots so please, allow me to explain. The argument is that AGW causes more heat to be trapped in the atmosphere which “trickles” down to the planets surface. Looking at Susan’s data this no longer holds as an increase in water vapor would be caused by a planet that is warming ergo boiling off more water. See, there is still debate Einstein.

The only ending thats going to happen on 2012 is with all the idiots killing themselves before nothing happens…
Its going to be a sad… and hilarious day after 2012… just sucks that some more bullshits going to say “OMG 2013 IS THE END OF TEH WURLD” or something like that.
All of these end of the world theories for 2012 are ALL bullshit…

You do understand that correlation does not equal causation, right? The oil spill was a result of BP ignoring safety standards. It isn’t because of the date. That’s just silly. =P

Maybe 2012 will promote enough consumer spending on products such as food and supplies that it will jolt the world economy out of the recession! 2012 fixed the economy~!

@thebrassdubliner Unfortunately, despite your instance to the contrary, there is still significant debate. Hell, just earlier this year Susan Solomon from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released research which found that “that almost one-third of the global warming recorded during the 1990s was due to an increase in water vapour in the high atmosphere, not human emissions of greenhouse gases” Looks like it’s perhaps you who should “read some scientific journals.” Buhbye!

I believe 2012 will be the year of the apocalyptic Ragnarok of the norse gods.
The will be a flood and the ship Nagelfar will come loose. Heimdall blows the “Gjallarhorn”. The Fenriswolf, Midgaardsnake, jättarna, firegiants and Loke gather to fight the norse gods. The fight will stand at Vigrids thosandmile flatland.
The mountans crumble and sea rush in over see, but Yggdrasil the tree of mans origin remains. When Surt sets fire to the world, it sinks. Nidavallen is where the survivors remain.

@captwasabi “is still quite a bit of debate as to whether the causal relationship is more heat drives co2 or more co2 drives increased heat. Also, there is major debate as to whether or not the perceived increases in temperature is universal”
NO THERE ISN’T, not in the science community that is(you know, the people who know what they’re talking about). Visit some new websites or, heaven forefend, read some scientific journals, they’re more interesting at any rate.

@mortuus8 I never said the world would end in 6 months. It seems you have your facts wrong. The world is supposed to change as we know it in 2012. Change could mean anything. In less than a year, we’ve had multiple volcanoes, earthquakes, and now the ocean is slowly being polluted with oil. If you think that the collective damage done by 2012 won’t be enough to change the world as we know it, then you need to get over your own self.

@impiccolomofo Sorry, that’s not how science works. We don’t have to be able to “see the future” to know that this 2012 nonsense won’t happen. As a positive claim (“the earth will be destroyed in 2012″), you must support this assertion with evidence. People who don’t believe it (“the earth will not be destroyed any time soon”) do NOT have to provide evidence, they just have to refute your evidence.
And evidence for something bad happening to the earth in 2012: There is NONE.

@pwiattitto It’s not just caused by the sun you nitwit. If it was, midnight at the equator would be colder than the north pole. The Moon would have the same temperature as us. Why do you think Venus is hotter than Mercury, dispute the latter being closer to the sun than the former. Seriously, you’re an idiot.

@TehOwnerer999 Hold on. Did I say anything in my comment about ME believing in 2012? No. I do, but I did not state so in my comment, so you’re starting to look a bit stupid. Secondly, there’s no evidence that anything will or will not happen in 2012. You either BELIEVE, or you don’t. Since 2012 cannot be proved false or true at the current time, because we can’t see the future, you cannot call any belief, for or against 2012, false. So now you’re looking quite a bit stupid.

There are millions of amateur astronomers who also are NOT seeing a new planet in our solar system. For 1500 bucks you could get a telescope and check for yourself.
