Lots of people are under the impression that the end of the world will occur in 2012. Will it? What will really occur if this happens though? There’s debate on a lot of this. Did you see the movie, 2012? There was probably more science in that movie than in all the words written about 2012, the end of the world. Why can I say that? Think of the technology that went into creating the special effects of that movie. I swear it looked like real life photography.

I saw people falling into mile deep crevices, skyscrapers collapsing, and an angry sea devouring the coastline with its mile high tsunami. Not knowing any better, I could have believed that a National Geographic camera operator was recording the devastation. That is good cinematography.

I can only guess that the prophecy was not mentioned more often because there is not much scientific information to back up the claims of the cataclysmic soothsayers.

Here is what science we do know about the Mayan prediction.

The Mayan were great astronomers and mathematicians. The Mayan recorded the paths of celestial bodies. They recorded time in cycles. One of those cycles ends on December 21, 2012. A new one begins. Associated with the codex that identifies that date, a reference is made to one of their gods, Bolon Yookte’ K’uh. This god is a god of war, conflict, and the underworld. The translation of the codex refers to blackness and the descent of the god, Bolon Yookte’ K’uh.

That is it. Everything else is conjecture and, well, prophecy. Much has been inferred from a simple archaeological discovery.

Before we get to arrogant in our criticism of cataclysmic soothsayers and our quest for indisputable truth, we should recognize that even scientists dispute the translation of that codex. As early as 1966, Michael D. Coe, famed archaeologist and anthropologist, wrote in his book, The Maya:

“…there is a suggestion… that Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth [b'ak'tun]. Thus… our present universe [would] be annihilated on December 24, AD 2011, [later revised to December 23, 2012] when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion.” [Wikipedia].

It comes down to your own system of beliefs and fears. I, for one, want to learn all that I can both fact and conjecture, just in case. Maybe you should too.

There are some scientists that do not go so far as to entirely discount the Mayan end of the world prophecy. Dr. Bartels, a noted anthropologist and astronomer, claims there may be more to this prediction than has been acknowledged by science and the media.

New Age Consciousness

There are those end-of-world believers that see this prediction not as a physical event, but as a rebirth, an awakening. They have a different view of the causes for this new consciousness.

The Sun’s alignment with the center of the galaxy will emit energy fields that envelope the Earth exposing mankind to an awakening of his true self. Ancient religions and civilizations have for eons foretold of man’s coming to a new age. During this period we are entering the Age of Aquarius, the astrological age of enlightenment.

Undoubtedly, much is unknown to man. Although we attempt to discover and uncover Nature’s truths through the discipline of science, Man must continue to cope with the unexplained and the mysterious.

About 2 years ago, I got really interested in the ancient Mayans and basically everything related to the 2012 doomsday. I came across tons of theories and opinions, many of which were groundless scare tactics, while others were quite significant and noteworthy.

2012, Armageddon, is right around the corner and while there are many skeptics of the topic being the end of the world, there’s always the possibility that the whole movement is true. The last point that sticks out as interesting is that it contains a guide on how to live after the end of the world in 2012, if we do survive it. During the last week, I spend some time watching the activist film Zeitgeist (DVD) along with other more religious activist movies from other countries. Just keep in mind that I am not recommending these films and I do not think that you must confront your life, yourself or your culture with them.

For me the view expressed in the film (DVD) Zeitgeist is that our truths are a manipulation of politics, economics and religion. This was indeed a thought provoking viewing experience. As a viewer, I was at awe with the logical capabilities of Jacque Fresco. I suspect that viewing this story and hearing its logic can leave a person with a sense of personal powerlessness, since the focus is on the power of corporations and the elite of the world. Viewers may experience an ‘the end of the world’ feeling (more so in the other films). This combined with the current state of world economics could cause a person to experience more doubt, despair and a sense of meaninglessness. Pragmatic thinking and logic can also create a feeling of emptiness.

In the Zeitgeist film hope and light are expressed in the ‘believe’ (science is also a narrative in attempting to understand the world) that the language of science and technology is the only way. There is also some talk of behaviorism being very important to this future. Those like me with a background in Psychology are probably aware of the ‘dark’ history of behavioral modification. I liked the story of unconditional love and connectivity, but did not hear of any further developments in this direction.

Surely even the children born in the Venus project will also have ‘why?’ questions to life. Will it be possible to reduce ‘their questioning’ to singular meanings like scientific / pragmatic language seeks. Can we really do away with storytelling / meaningfulness / religion?

Remember that the Christian story was once good news for the oppressed.

We connect by stories. We also experience isolation, disempowerment and problems when our intentionality and storytelling are not voiced / legitimized within stories that contain dominant or constrictive “truths” about ourselves. Our own storing can also restrict us from experiencing other possible meanings and actions.

“We dream in narrative, remember, anticipate, hope, despair, believe, doubt, plan revise, criticize, construct, gossip, learn, hate and love by narrative” (MacIntyre 1981, p. 211).
